Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now. You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. This is what the L ORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me, or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth.

In response, the government of Earth initiates Project Spaceguard, intended to detect and intercept any other planetary threats. The story starts with a disaster of unimaginable scale: in the year 2077, a massive meteor strikes northern Italy, killing hundreds of thousands of people and wiping out the major cities of Venice, Verona and Padua. It immediately entered my list of favorite books of all time, and I’ve spent lots of time thinking about it for weeks after finishing it. There probably isn’t much that I can say about the novel that hasn’t been said elsewhere and more eloquently, but it is amazing. I should note, though, that it wasn’t Freeman’s enthusiasm that intrigued me as much as a variety of related internet comments that suggested that a good film adaptation of Rama was “impossible.” What qualities could make a story a classic book but also make it completely unsuitable (supposedly) for the big screen? I was curious, and reading a synopsis of Rama made me really intrigued. Clarke’s classic 1972 novel Rendezvous with Rama. Recently, though, my interest was piqued when I learned that actor Morgan Freeman has been trying for years, almost a decade, to make a film adaptation of Arthur C. I also have an instinctive aversion to “hard” science fiction, which focuses on scientific and technical detail. I’ve read very few of the works of the classic authors such as Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, and Bradbury*, and I have many boxes unchecked in my list of “must-read” science fiction novels. I must admit that I’ve never been a particularly avid reader of science fiction. Introduces kids to the many species of penguins, with emphasis on oddness. Books are levelled and presented to parents, teachers, and librarians with a letter from an expert in the field of reading and education. The cover also makes use of the NG Kids logo, matching the logo used on NG Kids magazine with a subscriber base of 1.3 million. There are superlatives, jokes, and best of all, the incredible photographs available only from National Geographic. In this book we have included some basic penguin facts but as usual have also incorporated the extremes that kids love. This beginning reader introduces kids to the many species of this fascinating creature, with emphasis on oddness - not hard to find! Kids will love knowing that the Emperor Penguin is the same size as they are, many penguins throw up - a lot! and Dads are a lot like Mums in the penguin world. National Geographic's own film "March of the Penguins" put penguins on the radar of kids and adults alike. Predicted on the thesis that any given "groove" is indicative of the pressing of its time upon the wax of collective sensibility-and that even one-chord wonders and bored teen-agers must say something, however incoherent, about both their parents and the society that produced them-this well-illustrated book is about ".the pop magic in which the connection of certain social facts with certain sounds creates irresistible symbols of the transformation of social reality." Starting with the Sex Pistols and the 70's malaise they symbolized, Marcus traces a recta-musical social history that's informed both by Marxist aesthetics and political economy. The title here, taken from the 1962 hit lyrics "Lipstick traces/On a cigarette," aptly sums up Marcus' (Village Voice columnist Mystery Train, 1975) paradoxical project-which amounts to fashioning a text on the enduring aspects of the "hidden history" of modernism as revealed in that imprint of the ephemeral, pop music. Our trial in this life is not a trivial matter of opinions and notions.Ī convert needs to understand that not only are we Muslims assailed by the temptations of Shaytaan and the non-believers from outside our ranks, but also from misleading ideas within. The human being is in a constant battle with internal and external sources of deception and misguidance, to such extent that the vast majority of human beings will eventually land in hellfire. This is why Allah has sent Prophets to not only convey the Truth from Allah, but also to defend it by verbal argument and even militancy. It has to be understood that Allah has put all human beings in a test to determine Truth and abide by it. Collectively, they are the 99% of the Muslims, Scholars, Imams – the Vicegerents whom Allah has chosen to protect, clarify, defend, and convey His Religion to humanity for the last 1300 years. In brief, Islam would not exist today without the four Schools of Jurisprudence. This is a continuation of my previous post – What are Sects, What are NOT Sects, in Islam Continuing to clarify for Converts the truth of Islam’s jurisprudential history so they can hopefully see through the fog of the current situation Muslims are in. Khai and Esme’s deeply personal journeys-and the courage each takes to undergo them-are really the heart of the book. The Bride Test, like its predecessor, will make you blush, think, and smile again and again, as it proves just how complex, insightful, and current a romance novel can be.Įsme is an immigrant from Vietnam, who is desperately trying to build a better life for her young daughter and herself. Like so many others, I fell in love with Helen Hoang’s writing while reading her first book, The Kiss Quotient, so I had high hopes for The Bride Test. In addition to fulfilling his duties as a reporter, he kept a journal of his views of the Senate and individual senators. His greatest success was "Advise In late 1943, Allen Stuart Drury, a 25-year old Army veteran, sought work. "A Senate Journal" found an audience in part because of the great success of "Advise and Consent," his novel in 1959 about the consideration in the Senate of a controversial nominee for secretary of state. Although written in the mid-1940s, his diary was not published until 1963. In addition to the Senate personalities, his journal captured the events of the 78th & 79th Congresses. In late 1943, Allen Stuart Drury, a 25-year old Army veteran, sought work. I was now in the heart of the Lake District National Park. I could have left the car in the middle of the road. Eventually I abandoned the car altogether in a layby and walked about half a mile between the bottom of Loweswater and Crummock Water, a neighbouring lake, through the most sumptuous valley, beneath towering hills, all bathed in sunshine. The road was so narrow that I needed constant vigilance to avoid scraping along a drystone wall, so I kept pulling over and jumping out, just to see the views. Apart from a couple of farmhouses it felt as if no one had been here for years. The Lake District, when it is fine, and it usually is at least that, is surely the most beautiful place on earth – and this was as fine a corner as I had ever come across. The road was narrow and slow but breathtakingly gorgeous. I thought I knew the Lake District pretty well, but here was a lake that I had never heard of, as far as I could recall, so I made a sharp turn and went to investigate. I was bound for Keswick by way of Cockermouth when I came to a sign pointing down a side road to Loweswater.
